Lab Joins New England Aquarium for World Ocean Day Event

The Lab’s Education team was thrilled to join New England Aquarium for their celebration of World Ocean Day on June 8! This annual event is free and open to the public, allowing folks a chance to stroll by and learn more about the incredible marine world just steps away from the Aquarium. Groups like Whale & Dolphin Conservation, the Massachusett Tribe at Ponkapoag, and others came together to teach and share about the role the ocean plays in our lives.
The team brought their Warming Waters Climate Cart, where visitors can explore how the warming temperatures of Boston Harbor are impacting marine species that call the harbor home. A striking story the team likes to tell is how lobsters are migrating away from Boston, while blue crabs are now living and breeding in the harbor. What cultural and economic impacts will this have for Boston? How do these shifts affect food webs? And how can we as scientists and community members help both humans and animals prepare for these changes?
The team will be bringing this activity and many others to events all over the city this summer! Check out our Education Resources page for activity guides, and find us at our next event by checking our calendar!
