Science Afloat! Exploring Boston Harbor with the Stone Living Lab

by: Jasmine Perez
On Tuesday June 17, 2025, the Stone Living Lab’s Education and Engagement team set sail to Spectacle Island as part of our new “Science in the Harbor” Climate Cart. SLL’s Science in the Harbor program occurs on a biweekly basis and welcomes community members aboard the Spectacle Island Ferry every other Tuesday between 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM.
Visitors aboard the ferry enjoyed scenic views of the Boston Harbor Islands narrated by the Lab’s Education and Engagement team, highlighting landmarks such as Deer Island, Castle Island, and Spectacle Island just to name a few. Visitors even got a chance to learn more about some Boston Harbor Islands history that have shaped the islands that we know today.
Not only did the community catch a wave of some Boston Harbor Islands history, but they also got to learn more about some of the current research and monitoring projects happening across Boston Harbor through the mapping activity hosted on the lower deck.
Participants explored projects ranging from the Hohonu flood monitoring sensor located on Long Wharf, all the way to the weather monitoring webcams located on Little Brewster Island.
The new “Science in the Harbor” Climate Cart program encourages folks to think deeper about the history of the Boston Harbor Islands, while also learning more about the various climate change adaptation strategies dedicated to protecting the Harbor Islands, and all of the life within it who call it home.
The Lab’s Education and Engagement team will be bringing this Climate Cart activity aboard the Spectacle Island Ferry every other Tuesday until August 26, 2025. Check out our Events Calendar to learn more about upcoming ferry programs and other events hosted by the Lab!
